Your speaking prompt

Your friend Sam wants to take an evening course while working full time but is worried about managing the workload. Give Sam advice about making the decision. This is an original practice prompt, not an official test question.

Build a short speaking plan

  • Acknowledge the concern in one sentence.
  • Suggest two or three practical actions.
  • Explain why each action would help.
  • Finish with a supportive recommendation.

Use the preparation and recording timer in the practice tool. Write keywords, not a complete script, so that you can speak to your friend rather than read an essay.

Listen, then inspect the transcript

Complete recording transcript

Hey Sam, I can see why you are unsure about taking the evening course while working full time. If I were you, I would start by asking the college for a sample weekly schedule. That would help you see how much time you need outside the classroom, especially during assignment weeks.

I would also speak to your manager before you enrol. Perhaps you could keep a more predictable shift pattern on class days. You do not have to ask for fewer hours immediately; even knowing when you will finish work could make planning easier.

Finally, try a shorter course first if that option is available. You would get a feel for studying after work without committing to a whole year. The qualification sounds useful for your career, so I would not rule it out. I would just make sure the workload fits your life before paying the fees.

What to notice

  • The opening addresses Sam directly and acknowledges the workload concern.
  • Each suggestion has a reason: the schedule reveals the workload, predictable shifts help planning, and a shorter course tests the commitment.
  • The ending balances encouragement with a practical condition.

The transcript lets you inspect ideas and organisation. Assess pace and clarity by listening to your own recording; pronunciation and delivery cannot be established from text alone.

Record your own version

Give Sam two different suggestions. Play back the recording and check whether each suggestion has a reason and whether the ending sounds complete. If one section is unclear, record a fresh attempt with a shorter plan rather than memorising this sample.
