Your practice task

You live in an apartment building where renovation noise has repeatedly started early in the morning. Write an email to the building manager. Explain the problem, describe how it affects you, and suggest a practical solution. This is an original practice task, not an official test question.

Plan before you write

  • Recipient: a building manager, so use a polite, direct tone.
  • Purpose: ask for a change to the renovation schedule.
  • Coverage: include the problem, its effect, and a workable request.

Use a short plan, then write your own response before reading the example. Practise with the timer and word guidance shown in your chosen task.

Original model response

Dear Building Manager,

I am writing about the repeated noise from the renovation work in the apartment above mine. I live in unit 304, and the drilling has started before 7 a.m. on three mornings this week.

I understand that the repairs are necessary. However, I work evening shifts at the hospital and usually return home after midnight. The early noise has interrupted my sleep, and yesterday I had to leave my apartment to finish an online training session. Other residents on our floor have also mentioned the disturbance.

Could you please ask the contractor to begin noisy work after 9 a.m. and post a schedule in the lobby? Knowing which days will involve drilling would help us make alternative arrangements. If urgent work must happen earlier, a short email the previous day would be appreciated.

Thank you for looking into this matter. Please let me know what arrangements you can make for the rest of the renovation.

Kind regards, Alex Chen

Why the response works

  • The first paragraph identifies the unit, the noise, and when it happens.
  • The next paragraph explains the effect with concrete details rather than repeating that the noise is annoying.
  • The request gives the manager two useful actions: change the start time and share a schedule.
  • The closing asks for a reply without threats or unnecessary emotion.

This is one possible response. Its value comes from how it answers this situation; copying the whole email into a different task may leave that task unanswered. No exam level is assigned to this sample.

Less useful request

Please stop the noise. It is very bad.

More actionable request

Could you ask the contractor to begin drilling after 9 a.m. and post the weekly schedule in the lobby?

Now write a different request for the same situation. Check whether the manager would know exactly what to do and whether the tone suits the recipient.
